Greg was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on June 30, 1955.  He is the youngest
of 7 siblings, with 3 brothers and 3 sisters.  His father, Roy T. Underwood,  a farmer,
served in World War II in the Navy.  He received his naval training at  NTC
Bainbridge, Maryland and  afterwards served on the USS Copahee. He was
honorably discharged in Virginia and later died in 1961 when Greg was 6 years old.

Greg's mother, Gertie Johnson Underwood, worked as a farm laborer and later at
Purolator Filters as an assembly line worker until her retirement.  She realized early
on the value of a good education  and vowed to see that each of her children
graduated from high school. They all attended and graduated from public schools in
Fayetteville.

After Greg graduated in 1973, he embarked on a career of public service in the Air
Force.  During his enlistment, he attended Glendale Community College in Glendale,
Arizona.  After his enlistment ended in 1977, he continued his military service as an
Air Force Reservist and as a ROTC Cadet; and he used the
G.I Bill to continue his
education at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville.  Greg became Commander
of the ROTC Detachment.  He graduated with Honors and received his Commission
as a Second Lieutenant  in the U. S. Air Force in 1980.

After serving as a Deputy Missile Combat Crew Commander, Greg enrolled in the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law in 1984.  Upon his
graduation in 1987, he passed the Virginia Bar and continued his career of public
service as a staff attorney with Virginia Legal Aid Society in Farmville, Virginia.

Greg is married to Gracie (Grace) Underwood and they have two adult children, Kisa
and Rick.  Grace worked with Norfolk Public Schools for over twenty years, first in
administration and later as an elementary school teacher. She is currently employed
with Virginia Beach Public Schools. They are active members of Second Calvary
Baptist Church in Norfolk.
